A Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) is a doctor who is specially trained and assigned to conduct medico legal duties. At present, in every Teaching, General and majority of Base hospitals are having medico-legal units managed by a consultant JMO to cover the medico legal work. The Consultant JMO is a Board Certified Specialist who has completed the post graduate exams in Forensic Medicine [MD] conducted by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) of the University of Colombo. According to provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, the specialist JMOs who are attached to the Departments of Forensic Medicine of the Medical Faculties are also incorporated as government medical officers, and cover the portion of the medico legal work at teaching hospitals on a roster basis.
